The International Electrotechnical Commission

The ISO 27000 standard was developed by The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and International Standards Organization (ISO). The ISO 27000 is an industry standard and internationally accepted for information security management.

The ISO 27000 family provides an extensive list of requirements and codes of practice. Of which, ISO 27001 is a specification that sets out the specific requirements that must be followed that a companies information security management system (ISMS) can be audited and certified against. All the other ISO 27000 standards are codes of practice. Therefore ISO 27002, 27003, 27004, 27005, and 27006 will provide non-mandatory but considered as best practice guidelines that companies can choose to follow as required.

With the surge of hack’s and website breaches that have involved many large organizations and their customers information being obtained and leaked has cause for many to realize that no matter how protected you think you are it may require much more consideration than previously thought. This is why there is legislation and requirements in place to help protect that data and all consumers from having their data stolen. As such all companies dealing with sensitive information must comply with the following regulations.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) carried out an nvestigation of reported finger injuries, including amputations, and the characteristics of domestic paper shredders that might have contributed to those injuries. The National Electronics Injury Surveillance System (NIESS) database collected 23 reported finger injuries attributable to domestic paper shredders. The ages of the victims ranged from 14 months upwards. Of the 23 reported finger injuries caused by a domestic paper shredder mechanism, fifteen involved children aged 5 years and under. However, finger injuries from domestic paper shredders have been reported in victims of 20 years old and even 65 years old. This report was published in
December 2004.

The most severe injuries, amputations, involved children. Injury occurred even when a child was feeding paper into a
shredder under adult supervision but did not release the paper in time to prevent their fingers from entering the shredder
opening. As the paper shredder continued to pull the paper into the shredder opening, it also pulled in the children’s
fingers.

Since most paper shredders have auto start features, a child can be at risk even when an adult is present. A child may
insert a piece of paper into the shredder opening and activate the shredder mechanism, allowing it to pull the paper (and
possibly the child’s fingers) into the shredder. Children are not conscious of hazards to themselves and may not let go of
the paper as it is being pulled in.

Dangerous toys sold in the US have caused 19 deaths in 2009 according to a report by US Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs). Main risk caused by recall toys published by the European Safety Commission in 2008 are:

* Injuries – 20%
* Chemical – 19%
* Choking – 16%
* Electric Shock – 15%
* Fire – 10%
* Other – 20%

With this statistic in mind, one wonders what type of toys would be safe for kids? How do you check if the toy is safe?

Safety Measures

To lower such risks, when shopping for toys parents should first become informed consumers and readers of labels. Consumer Web sites and package labeling contain the manufacturer’s recommendations and other important information. Instructions should be clear and easy to follow. No matter how much the parent may want the toy for it’s baby boy or baby girl, select only those that suit the they early age, abilities, skills. Toys that are too advanced may pose safety hazards to newborn child.
